2020 Orca Recovery Day
October 17 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm PDT
October 17th, 2020
10 am-12 pm OR 1 pm-3 pm
West Bay Woods
Join us for our third annual Orca Recovery Day!
Join Thurston Conservation District and OlyEcosystems at West Bay Woods for a socially distanced work party! Volunteers are invited to help remove invasive weeds, remove brush, and tour the Pacific Great Blue Heron Preserve. This is an opportunity for you to make a difference for our endangered Southern Resident orca whales. One of the biggest threats to our local orca whales is that their primary food source, salmon, are also endangered. 80% of the Southern Resident orca diet is salmon, and because of loss of habitat and increasing pollution, local salmon populations are a fraction of what they used to be. On October 17th, let’s continue working together to aid with the recovery efforts for these two important species.
Thurston CD and OlyEcosystems are committed to the wellness of the community. To ensure our volunteers feel safe and comfortable we will be adhering to the CDC guidelines and the Thurston Conservation District’s Volunteer Protocol (https://www.thurstoncd.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FINAL-DRAFT-TCD-Volunteer-Protocol.pdf). In addition, we ask that all participants wear a face covering.
This event will have two time slots. During the morning time slot (10 am-12 pm) there will be 15 volunteer spots available. During the afternoon slot (1-3 pm) there will be another 15 volunteer spots available. Individuals or family units (max five participants) will work in separate flagged-off work stations. Each station will have sanitized tools and gloves available.
