A Change Has Gotta Come Rally
June 2 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm PDT
What is this about?
Hold space to feel grief, rage, and our collective power in response to anti-Black racism, deeper seeded systems of white supremacy in the US and the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade.
We will center the voices of those most impacted. Local families who have lost loved ones or been impacted by police violence and anti-Black racism will be in attendance to speak including Justice for Yvonne McDonald, Andre Thompson & Bryson Chaplin & Jackie Salyers.
We will not be silent when Black people are killed by the state, white vigilante violence, COVID, or are harmed by systemic oppression, which includes mass incarceration & housing justice.
We will commit to showing up beyond this moment. We know local politicians set budgets that prioritize tax breaks for the greedy few and increased funding for policing and incarceration, then block implementing solutions like affordable housing, tenant protections, worker protections/employment, restorative justice and health care.
We join the call from the Movement for Black Lives to defund police and defend Black life.
We will have de-escalators/peacekeepers. If you join us, please respect the requests of the organizers or you will be asked to leave.
-Wear Red & Black
-Bring flowers & care package items for Black leaders & families.
-We will be in silence for 8 minutes to honor George Floyd. If you show up while this is happening, please join us in silence.
-Wear masks (we have some donated masks to provide) & bring hand sanitizer just in case.
-Keep yourself 6ft from other attendees at all times.
-Car Caravan Option:You can also put signs on your car or bike to form a caravan making loops through downtown. Will post a route in the event.
***Requests for White Folks***
-Please attend the Olympia SURJ (Showing Up For Racial Justice) rapid response meeting on Monday, June 1st at 6pm on zoom to further discuss your role and support at this action. Sign up here. bit.ly/SURJCall2Action
-If you cannot attend the meeting, please show up ready to listen to Black, Indigenous & People of Color. Help form a “socially distanced” chain around the block while holding signs. Beyond this action, white folks need to support organizing more white folks against white supremacy. We ask you to commit to organizing other white people off the fence and into action with Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and People of Color-led movements & strategies.
