Indigenous Environmentalism 101

October 6 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT

Since the Standing Rock Sioux led a highly publicized resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016, there has been an increased public awareness of Indigenous environmental activism, particularly in North America. However, there is still a large gap in understanding between the mainstream environmental movement and Indigenous struggles for environmental justice around the world. Misconceptions about Indigenous peoples and a lack of visibility into Indigenous ways of being have prevented mainstream environmental organizations from acting as effective allies to the Indigenous communities who have been on the front lines of the environmental movement for centuries.
Renewable energy scientist and Indigenous environmental activist Shaylon Stolk (Scottish/Wayúu) provides an overview of the unique issues facing Indigenous communities around the world and the key concepts that connect Indigenous environmental justice struggles worldwide. This webinar also includes additional resources and tools to help environmental groups become powerful accomplices to the Indigenous activists at the forefront of the environmental justice movement.
