May SURJ general meeting: Getting Uncomfortable
May 27 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm PDT
Newcomers to olympia SURJ are invited to join some of our membership core group for a NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION from 530pm – 6pm.
6pm-8pm general meeting
Our monthly General Meeting for May 2019 will focus on discomfort.
The Right to Comfort is a characteristic of white supremacy culture which shows up in our work and is damaging because it is used as the norm and standard without being pro-actively named.
Right to Comfort:
the belief that those with power have a right to emotional and psychological comfort (another aspect of valuing logic over emotion)
scapegoating those who cause discomfort
equating individual acts of unfairness against white people with systemic racism which daily targets people of color
from SURJ olympia brainstorm:
making mistakes, staying with the work
what does it mean to put some privilege on the line? what does it look like when we really mess up? what do we do when we cause harm? recognizing the difference between comfort and safety
COMFORT vs SAFETY
From Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups, by Kenneth Jones and Tema Okun, ChangeWork, 2001:
SIT IN DISCOMFORT:
understand that discomfort is at the root of all growth and learning; welcome it as much as you can; deepen your political analysis of racism and oppression so you have a strong understanding of how your personal experience and feelings fit into a larger picture; don’t take everything personally
