SB 5822 (HB 1877): Providing a pathway to establish a universal health care system for the residents of Washington state is the legislation Representative Nicole Macri talked about at our annual meeting in November, referred to as A Bridge to Single Payer (video of that speech is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZG8HesNmS8). The Pathway/Bridge Bill is a vital step toward achieving universal healthcare and one we need to take before the institution of the State-Based Universal Health Care Act (now under the stewardship of California Rep. Ro Khanna as Rep. Jayapal focuses on the Medicare for All caucus). From the Pathway bill:
The health care authority shall convene a work group on establishing a universal health care system in Washington. The work group must consist of a broad range of stakeholders with expertise in the health care financing and delivery system.
Inclement Weather Plan
Should the weather prove too extreme, there’s a couple of quick, high impact actions you can do from home:
1. Submit your testimony via email to the Committee Members
Email your written testimony directly to Senate committee members as well as to the Senate Committee Chair or the Chair’s LA. Be sure to include the bill number and your position on the bill. Another option is to email your written testimony to committee staff, as an alternative or in addition to submitting testimony to committee members. Here’s a list of emails for the legislators on the health care committees in the House and Senate:
2. Contact your legislators (find them here: https://app.leg.wa.gov/districtfinder/) and let them know you support SB 5822:
– Call the Legislative Hotline: 1-800-562-6000
– Email them by using the link above to find them and email them directly.
Comment with your support – you can do so right on the bill’s official WA legislature page by clicking on the ‘Comment on this bill’ button underneath the title block: https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5822&Initiative=false&Year=2019
It’s your support and passion fueling the movement’s momentum, so thank you – we’re making progress and our collective effort is what it will take to make this happen. We hope to see you on Monday and stay safe and warm this weekend!
