Stop the Sweeps! Turn-Out and Camp-In at City Hall
March 5 @ 6:00 pm - March 6 @ 9:00 pm PST
Stop the Sweeps!
The City of Olympia has resumed its standard practice of routine camp evictions, after a temporary suspension following the Martin V. Boise federal court ruling. This “whack-a-mole” displacement-based approach to mitigating homelessness is ineffective and exacerbates the crisis by furthering criminalization and worsening many of the physical/mental health effects and other harmful excesses associated with homeless living conditions. Recently, the city government has swept camps at 7th/Jefferson, B Ave, the 5th Ave bridge and will proceed with a sweep of downtown’s largest encampment at State/Franklin on the morning of this action. An adequate number of legal, safe, and actually available alternative shelter options have not been provided in any of these cases. During each sweep, at least some people have been left with nowhere to go.
Further, this return to sweeps-as-usual is coming in the middle of winter and some of the worst winter weather we have had in years. In fact, the upcoming sweep will be taking place while our County is still under a declaration of “Code Blue,” emergency weather conditions.
Join Just Housing, encampment residents, and other advocates in demonstrating to our city’s leaders (again) that this crisis— which is already so visible in our streets, on our doorsteps, and in our backyards—will only end when we can come together to support and create just and compassionate that respect the humanity of ALL Olympians. We cannot simply make it disappear, no matter how many times we force people move along without giving them another place to go.
