Tacoma DSA Reading Group
April 8 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT
Join the TDSA Reading Group on Monday, April 8th as we discuss this month’s topic, “Culture & Ideology”
Marx and Engels once said that the ruling ideas of any age are the ideas of the ruling class, a claim that’s self-evident to any socialist who’s searched mainstream media in vain for a sympathetic outlet.
But how are these ideas produced and transmitted? And in a nominally free society where the heavy hand of state censorship is largely absent, how does the dominant class ensure that ideas that threaten their rule stay safely on the margins?
In the pieces below, we’ll explore what exactly is meant by ideology. We’ll take a look at how the way we see the world is shaped by the media, the culture industry, and even standard therapeutic practices to help ensure the reproduction of the capitalist system. And we’ll talk about possible methods of intellectual self-defense.
Please read beforehand and come prepared for a lively discussion with comrades. The meetings are always on the second Monday of the month, so if you can’t make this one, save the date and catch the next one!
