TDSA Movie Night
February 16 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm PST
In 1973 at the age of 26, filmmaker Barbara Kopple left New York City and headed to Harlan County, Kentucky to film the strike against Duke Power by the United Mine Workers of America. Kopple and her team spent years with the miners, documenting severe exploitation and harsh living conditions. As the strike wears on, we see the worker’s struggle against poverty and violent repression by company thugs and local police but also their humor, deep solidarity, and commitment to justice.
A landmark work of documentary filmmaking and labor history, “Harlan County, USA” is especially relevant right now as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Seattle general strike and the current wave of teacher strikes sweeping the country. Join us Saturday, February 16 at 7:30 for a great film and a lively discussion.
And if you have time, the TDSA Reading Group is covering the topic of strikes on Monday, February 11th. Event link in comments below.
