The Border is Everywhere: Rally for Caravaneros and HungerStrike

December 30, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm PST

On Tuesday December 11, up to 40 immigrants detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma began refusing meals to protest the abhorrent conditions they face. As of Friday 12/21, 32 were reportedly refusing food.
Strikers have reported threats that they will be force fed and sent to solitary confinement if they continue to strike or strike again in the future.

Additionally, immigrant rights activists at the border have alerted us that up to 90 individuals who were petitioning for asylum as part of the migrant caravan are currently being detained at NWDC, reminding us that there are deep and integral links between the Pacific Northwest and the US-Mexico border – the border is everywhere.

These events also follow the November 24th death of hunger striker Amar Mergensana while in ICE custody in Tacoma, as well as the deaths of two children detained in other ICE facilities.

Join us outside the NWDC to offer our support and solidarity with detained activists on hunger strike in the Northwest Detention Center, to learn about the interconnections between the NWDC and the most recent migrant caravan, and to demand an end to the deaths and mistreatment at the hands of ICE.
