Uprisings: Chile and Colombia

January 29 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm PST

2019 has been a year of uprisings. Uprisings against authoritarianism, austerity and corruption. From Iraq to Iran, Algeria to Sudan, Lebanon to Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, Ecuador and the rest of Latin America, right-wing governments are being challenged by this political mobilization. In South America especially, indigenous communities, students, feminist organizations are struggling for socioeconomic and political justice. In Chile, a campaign that began in response to fare increases is now on the frontlines for reproductive rights, and self-determination for the Mapuche people. They are calling for a new Chilean constitution, one that is written from the bottom up. In Colombia, the rule of neoliberal president Ivan Duque is being challenged by massive nationwide strikes that includes a diverse coalition of union members, campesinos, and indigenous activists.Join Economics for Everyone for a free panel discussion contextualizing the uprisings in Chile and ColombiaOur speakers will include:Francisca Gomez-Baeza, a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington who is active in social movements in ChileFelipe Lagos Rojas, a Chilean researcher at the International Institute for Philosophy and Social Studies and an instructor at Seattle Central CollegeYul Gamboa, international solidarity activist who grew up in Colombia https://www.facebook.com/events/2665406960234160/
