Olympia Indivisible Weekly Call to Action: Defeat Trumpcare, Defend DACA, Protect Our Students & Stop Fake News

September 17, 2017:   For more info read this week’s Research Report.

FATAL ATTRACTION: Trumpcare Not Dead Yet

The Graham-Cassidy bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act was introduced to the Senate last week. The Republicans only have until September 30th to pass the bill (due to Senate rules) by 50 votes (plus Pence). They may already have 49, so things are dire.

ACTION 1:  Ask Our Senators to do Everthing They Can to Delay Graham-Cassidy

First call/email Senators Murray and Cantwell and ask them to do everything in their power to delay any vote on Graham-Cassidy. The Democrats need to slow down all Senate business to run out the clock on Trumpcare. They must filibuster and “withhold consent” on everything. No movement forward can be allowed.

Script: Hello, my name is ________from ________. I’m very concerned about the Graham-Cassidy bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. I am asking Senator Murray/ Cantwell to use every means available to delay any vote by September 30 on this terrible bill. Will the Senator offer amendments, withhold consent and other means at their disposal to kill Graham-Cassidy?”

Senator Patty Murray (253) 572-3636 and Senator Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281

ACTION 2: Call Senator John McCain

Second, call Senator John McCain and ask him to fight against Graham-Cassidy and stand firm on his principals. This is not time to cave to Republican leadership pressure to kill the ACA. All Americans need the quality of health care he recently received.

Defend DACA Recipients

Summary:  An estimated 1.8M immigrants in the USA have been eligible for DACA with approx. 800,000 DACAmented Americans have been granted deferred action.

Trump used an Executive Order to end the DACA program in  March, 2018 resulting in a lawsuit by 15 Dem AGs and D.C. for taking action to end DACA.

Senate Minority Leader Schumer and House Minority Leader Pelosi, announced an agreement with Trump on framework for potential legislation, a “DREAM Act,” that will preserve the protections of the DACA program recipients in exchange for both increasing funding for increased border security and actually increasing border security (but not a wall). Trump seemed to confirm it on Twitter, later insisted no deal had been made, and even later seemed to confirm a deal again.

Recent polls find:

  • 73% of voters want legislation protecting DACAmented Americans from deportation.
  • Nearly 80% of Republicans, and three-quarters of Trump voters, support DACA and retaining it.

News reports indicate Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will impanel a working group (of House Republicans only) to work on Dreamer-related immigration legislation. No one should be confused about the intention of the committee – this is a transparent attempt to slow-walk and scuttle Dreamer legislation, not to improve it.  Attempting to redirect the subject to “chained immigration” or a complete overhaul of the immigration system is designed to allow DACA to expire without Congressional resolution.

ACTION:  Demand A Clean DREAM Act in Any Must-Pass Legislation

Contact Senators Murray and Cantwell, and Congressman Heck, and demand they include a clean DREAM Act in any must-pass legislative vehicles this month. The DREAM Act would give DACA recipients and others who arrived in the United States as children a path to permanent lawful status and eventual citizenship.

SCRIPT: Hello! My name is [name] and I’m calling from [place in state]. Could you tell me what Senator/Representative xxxx’s position is on the recently reported efforts by Pelosi, Schumer, Ryan and others in the House and Senate to reach an agreement on the DACA program?  I feel strongly that the children covered by the DACA program must be allowed to stay and to achieve citizenship.  They deserve status certainty.  I urge Senator/Representative xxxx to join recently reported efforts to protect DACA and to work on rational, humane immigration reform.  I’m asking [MoCs] support the DREAM Act (S.1615 / H.R.3440).

Senator Patty Murray (253) 572-3636 and Senator Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281 Denny Heck (360) 459-8514

Stand up to Protect Students (takes 3 minutes!)

Betsy Devos is still trying to weaken the laws protecting college students that are survivors of campus rape.  Read more about what she is trying to do here: http://college.usatoday.com/2017/07/14/advocacy-groups-react-after-title-ix-summit-with-betsy-devos/

Should we stand by and watch this happen? No! Call her office today. Be polite, but clear.

ACTION:  Call U.S. Department of Education

Call the U.S. Dept. of Education: 800-872-5327 between 8AM and 5PM Eastern Time.  (5AM-2PM Pacific time….you can call before work or during your lunch hour!)

Script:  “Hi, I am from Washington State and I am very concerned about Betsy Devos’ efforts to weaken protections for survivors of sexual assault. I am calling to ask that the current protections be kept in place.  Thank you.”
